INAUGURAL EDITION | ISSUE 01

Hi,

Welcome to the very first HHC newsletter. As we move into April, many of you may have noticed a distinct shift in the therapy room. Since the clocks moved forward, our clients have been reporting a natural uplift in mood—and it’s no coincidence. Lighter mornings, the return of birdsong, and those precious later sunsets act as profound "safety signals" for the human brain.

Neuroscientifically, increased lux levels of morning light help regulate the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), optimising serotonin production and suppressing daytime melatonin. Furthermore, environmental cues like birdsong signal to the primitive brain that the coast is clear; if the birds are singing, no predators are near. This environmental safety reduces the vigilance of the Salience Network, allowing our clients to spend more time in their Intellectual/Executive minds.

Our goal with this newsletter is to provide a consistent bridge between clinical theory and professional practice. Whether you are navigating your first sessions as a newly qualified therapist or you are a seasoned practitioner, these monthly updates are designed to keep your skills sharp and your business growing.

🧠 Rewiring the Brain: The Neuroscience of Solution-Focused Practice

While we often use the "Primitive vs. Intellectual Mind" metaphor, actual neuroscience involves a high-stakes tug-of-war between three massive brain networks. In reality, "conscious" and "subconscious" are descriptions of processes rather than physical locations.

Your brain handles critical functions like heart rate and gut biome on an unconscious level so you have the bandwidth to cross the street. By understanding the Triple Network Model, we see that avoiding "problem talk" isn't just about staying positive—it is a precise neurological intervention designed to shift cognitive bandwidth toward executive function.

🎗️ Coming up this month: FND Awareness

FND Awareness Month

April is FND Awareness Month, a vital time for clinicians to address one of the most stubborn misconceptions in neurology: that people can simply “push through” their symptoms if they try hard enough.

The Reality: Functional Neurological Disorder symptoms are real, can be disabling, and are not consciously produced or controlled. Because FND sits at the intersection of specialities and often does not appear on standard scans, patients frequently find themselves in a frustrating loop of uncertainty.

FND Awareness Month exists to make that loop a little less lonely. It invites the public to learn about FND, help reduce stigma around neurological symptoms, and encourage support for better diagnosis and research. For our community, it is worth noting that Solution-focused Hypnotherapy is an amazing intervention for FND, yielding great results by helping clients regulate the nervous system.

📚 Recommended Read: Review

"Atomic Habits" by James Clear

For the solution-focused practitioner, Atomic Habits is more than a productivity guide; it is a masterclass in neuroplasticity. Clear’s central premise—that we do not rise to the level of our goals, but fall to the level of our systems—perfectly mirrors our clinical focus on the "small, manageable step."

By implementing the "Four Laws of Behaviour Change" (Make it Obvious, Attractive, Easy, and Satisfying), Clear provides a framework for automating positive neural pathways. This reduces the cognitive load on the Salience Network and helps clients maintain momentum even when the "stress bucket" starts to fill.

🔬 New Hypnotherapy Research

A 2025 meta-analysis published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology reaffirmed that gut-directed hypnotherapy remains one of the most effective long-term programmes for IBS. The study found that 76% of participants maintained significant symptom reduction 12 months post-treatment.

📝 New Hypnosis Script: The Blueprints of Change

Target: Clients feeling "stuck" or overwhelmed by a large goal.

"And as you settle deeper into that comfortable space... imagine you are standing in a bright, quiet room... the 'Architect’s Room' of your own mind. It is a space of perfect clarity... filled with soft, natural light that helps you see things exactly as they are... and exactly as they could be.

On the table before you lies a large, crisp blueprint... it represents your preferred future. Notice how the lines are clear... the foundations are strong and deep. As you look at this blueprint, your eyes are drawn to one specific area... a small detail that stands out... and you realise that you don't have to build the whole structure today... you don't have to know how every brick is laid or every wire is connected.

You only need to look at the first small, manageable step. See your hand reaching out... tracing the line of that first step. Feel the confidence that comes with knowing exactly where the first stone is laid. Your subconscious is already organising the resources... gathering the tools... ensuring that as you wake, that first step feels not just possible, but inevitable... because the blueprint is already within you... and your mind is already at work making it a reality."
